Judge Barbara A. Caulfield (Fmr)

Hon. Barbara A. Caulfield served on the District Court of the Northern District of California. She arbitrates complex business disputes involving technical data as well as intellectual property. Since June of 2008, she has been the Managing Partner of Dewey & LeBoeuf’s Silicon Valley office. Prior to joining Dewey & LeBoeuf, Judge Caulfield served as executive vice president and general counsel at Affymetrix, Inc. from 2001 to 2008. She practiced law as a partner with Latham & Watkins in San Francisco after her tenure as a Federal Judge. Her recent litigation experience includes patent cases for Affymetrix involving gene technology, a contract and trade secret case between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft, and DNA replication patents owned by Hoffmann-LaRoche. She has represented Apple Computer in a major insurance and attorneys’ fee dispute, and other major corporations in contract cases, including a major class action in a tobacco case.

She co-authored a chapter on electronic discovery in the 2009 CEB’s Jefferson’s Benchbook; and published a book on misleading acts and representations that violate RICO and California law, a book on issues in California criminal evidence as well as many other articles in the legal and personalized medicine field. She was a Professor of Law at the University of California, Hastings College of Law and the University of Oregon Law School. She has served as an adjunct professor of law at Harvard, Stanford and Berkeley.

Ms. Caulfield has been a certified member of the National Patent Board since 1999, has served on ALI’s committee on Complex Litigation since 1989, and on the boards of many professional associations.

Ms. Caulfield is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Law (J.D. 1972 cum laude) and Northwestern University (B.S. 1969).
