Floyd H. Knowlton, Arbitrator
Mr. Knowlton is a retired insurance executive who specializes in arbitrating insurance and reinsurance disputes among policyholders, insurance companies and reinsurance companies, domestically and internationally. His experience includes three years at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, twenty nine years at The Travelers, and 10 years at The Hartford, retiring from active employment in 2000.
At the FBI, he was responsible for presenting workers’ compensation cases to the Department of Labor on behalf of FBI personnel. He then became employed by The Travelers, beginning as a claim adjuster and moving through the ranks as field manager, regional director, director of field operations and, over the last ten years of his employment, vice president in the claim department responsible for all large casualty claim matters as well as professional liability, asbestos, toxic torts and pollution claims. At The Hartford, he formed an in-house legal unit that managed coverage litigation in the asbestos, toxic tort and pollution areas for all domestic Hartford companies, involving over 400 separate pieces of litigation with multiple plaintiffs and multiple defendants. He also managed the claim operation responsible for the same types of claim matters. The last two years of his work at The Hartford was in London, England, as Managing Director of the Excess Insurance Co., LTD, a runoff subsidiary and London market company owned by The Hartford. In all aspects of his career, he maintained an active role in the matters under his administration and directly managed many big cases.
Since retirement, Mr. Knowlton has served as a consultant, expert witness and arbitrator in various insurance and reinsurance related matters. He has participated in over two dozen arbitrations, as both an arbitrator and umpire. He is a member of ARIAS-US and is on the CPR Distinguished Panel of Neutrals. His BA degree is from Binghamton University (1957). He earned a JD degree from the American University in 1962, graduating in the top 10% of his class and is a member of the Maryland Bar.
