Judge Joseph W. Morris (Fmr)

Hon. Joseph W. Morris served on the U.S. District Court, E.D. of Oklahoma, from 1974 to 1978, including 3 years as Chief Judge. Since 1984, he has been a board member and shareholder of the law firm of GableGotwals in Tulsa. Previously, he was Vice President and General Counsel of Shell Oil Company, Houston. He was also General Counsel of Amerada Petroleum Corporation and was Dean of the College of Law at the University of Tulsa, where he taught for more than twenty years as an Adjunct Professor of Law.

Mr. Morris has chaired or been a panel member in many high-stakes arbitration cases concerning natural resource industry disputes, including royalty payment valuation, contract disputes arising out of large, international gas and coal contracts and large coal delivery contracts, as well as a dispute concerning ownership of the GM building in New York City and a dispute between two large steel companies concerning the price of steel.

Mr. Morris is a former Chairman of the Natural Resources Law Section of the American Bar Association and former President of the Tulsa County Bar Association and has been nationally recognized as an outstanding arbitrator and mediator. In the last twenty years, he has served as an arbitrator in the U.S., Melbourne, Australia, London, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, and in approximately two thirds of those arbitrations, he was the Chairman of the Panel or the sole arbitrator.

Recently, Mr. Morris was appointed by the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming as Special Master in In re:Copley Pharmaceutical, Inc. "Albuterol" Products Liability Litigation, a mass tort class action case.

Mr. Morris is a graduate of Washburn University (A.B. 1943 and J.D. 1947) and the University of Michigan Law School (L.L.M. 1948 and S.J.D. 1955) and is a member of the Bar in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
