Steven B. Rosenfeld
Steven B. Rosenfeld joined the Litigation Department at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in 1972, becoming a partner in 1976, and became Of Counsel to the firm on January 1, 2009. In addition to his career-long specialization in defending federal securities actions and other corporate litigation, Mr. Rosenfeld has represented insurance and reinsurance companies in numerous arbitrations under the auspices of the AIDA Reinsurance and Insurance Arbitration Society (ARIAS). He has also handled several ICC and other international trade arbitrations, including representations of a Korean aluminum manufacturer, a German fish processor, a Chinese bank, and an English importer of ceramics from China. He was designated several times by judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York as an Impartial Umpire in union pension and welfare fund disputes. In 2002, Mayor Michael Bloomberg appointed him as Chair of the New York City Conflicts of Interest Board, the City’s government ethics agency, a position he continues to hold.
Throughout his career as a litigator, Mr. Rosenfeld advised clients on dispute-resolution provisions in international agreements and wrote a firm client memorandum on the remedial powers of arbitrators. He is also the author of the United States litigation chapter of The
Encyclopedia of International Commercial Litigation, published in London in 1991, and of the periodic revisions since then. He is an Honorary Overseas Member of London’s Commercial Bar Association (COMBAR) and a frequent panelist at its conferences.
Mr. Rosenfeld graduated from Columbia College (1964) and Columbia Law School, magna cum laude (1967). He served as law clerk to the Honorable Charles M. Metzner of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, and as Deputy General Counsel of the New York State Special Commission on Attica. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Aid Society, and its President from 1989 to 1991; a Vice President and member of the Executive Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York; and a lecturer in law at Columbia Law School, where he taught in the Profession of Law and Trial Practice courses. He currently serves as Chair of the Board of Visitors of the CUNY Law School.
